techgyrls
The goal of TechGYRLS is to help girls develop the confidence to use technology and discover links between science and math. TechGYRLS was developed by the YWCA USA in 1997 after seeing the need to strengthen girls' interest and competency in computer literacy as it has become a key job skill in nearly every profession today. It is through TechGYRLS that technology education is offered in a supportive, all-girl environment where girls feel comfortable taking risks and opening up to new learning opportunities. Female engineering students from North Dakota State University teach and mentor girls in grades four through seven on Monday afternoons for ten weeks in both the fall and spring on the campus of NDSU. In November 2008, the YWCA was awarded a grant from Microsoft to expand the program. Goals for the expansion project include offering a summer camp, Saturday session in Spring and Fall, expanding current curriculum, reaching out to specific populations of disadvantage groups (socially, economically, ethnically), and providing opportunities in the areas of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics).
